Our Work
Every program the Krewe of Pyros runs began the same way: with people who came together to give back, have fun, and change lives. What started as informal acts of service among Louisiana transplants has grown into a full portfolio of community impact.
Long before KOP had committees and bylaws, members were showing up for each other and for the broader DMV community. Today, our Community Service Committee organizes volunteer days, donation drives, and partnerships across the District, Maryland, Virginia, and Louisiana — Logging more than 15,000 hours every year.
We believe culture is something you actively pass down. Our Education & Youth programming — with a growing focus on STEM and STEAM — is built to make sure the next generation, whether growing up in Louisiana or three states away from it, has the tools, exposure, and encouragement to chart their own path.
We don't just celebrate Louisiana culture once a year — we teach it. From workshops on the history of jazz, brass, and bounce, to programming around Mardi Gras Indian traditions and Creole and Cajun heritage, we make sure what makes Louisiana doesn't get lost on the way to the DMV.
KOP's Social Justice & Action Committee organizes around issues affecting our members and the broader community — including equitable access to mental health care. Our monthly Mindful Mondays sessions create space for honest conversation and support around mental health and wellness. Our scholarship program is one of the most direct ways we turn celebration into opportunity. Since 2019, the Krewe of Pyros has helped nearly 50 students continue their college careers, awarding more than $125,000 to students attending schools across the DMV and Louisiana.

Every January, at the close of our program year, the work of the Krewe of Pyros comes together in one night: our Annual Mardi Gras Ball. An authentic New Orleans brass band leads a second line, horns blaring, umbrellas twirling — the unmistakable rhythm of home rolling through the room. Family, friends, sponsors, and government and business leaders from across the country gather for this black-tie celebration, and every dollar raised goes directly back into the programs described above.
